Water Damage Restoration

Posted on May 6, 2014 at 4:25 PM Comments comments (0)

Hello Des Moines!

With all the calls about wet basements and all the rain we have been getting I thought I would write an entry in the blog to inform home owners of ways they can prevent having to call us!

The past few water damage jobs we have had included: Sump Pump Back Up - the sump pump was less than 2 years old, but gave out. Whether it was improper installation, defective product, or a different reason.. it gave out. The result of the sump pump giving out was about 1" of water throughout the entire basement (Pad/Carpet/Baseboards/Drywall..) We ended up tearing out the padding, removing all baseboards, and drying the basement out (as well as the carpet as the homeowner just had put the carpet in 2 years ago and it was a clean water flood).

Another job that we had was an Egress Window Drain Back Up - What had happened is the cover that prevents leaves/mud/rocks to get into the drain broke and the drain had backed up. The window well was full of water (about 6 feet), and it came into the basement after the window gave out. Luckily the basement was not finished and we were able to get in there quickly enough to dry the property out with minimal damage to items being stored in basement.

Another job we have had the past 2 weeks was a broken water line that connected to the fridge. It caused damage to kitchen floors/drywall/ and floor joists. We had to remove kitchen flooring, drill holes in some of the cabinets, and remove trim. After drying out the kitchen we rebuild it, and the homeowners could not believe that it looked like nothing had happened.

Here are some tips on how you can preven water damage:

Check your sump pump, make sure it is properly working. All you have to do is remove your cover, and check to make sure your float is working propely and you can hear it run when it is raining.

Make sure any egress windows have covers on the drains and clean out the egress area from any debris/leaves.

Have a plumbing inspection done to make sure all of your water lines are in good condition (ask for an air pressure test).

Get your sewer drain line inspected (with someone who has a camera to show you exactly what is happening)

I hope that this may help someone out there who is worried about water in your basement and as always thank you for reading!

Happy Halloween From AJ's Cleaning & Restoration

Happy Halloween!

Here at AJ's Cleaning & Restoration we love being able to help you prepare for Holidays, and that's why we always strive to meet your deadlines! With Halloween out of the way (almost..) here comes Thanksgiving, and believe me when I say that you do not want your guests to notice that your carpets are dirty while at the dinner table!

Funny story that actually prompted me to write this blog is:

A few days ago I get a call from a new client (let's call her Jane). Jane calls me and asks if I have any availability before Thanksgiving and with the excitement of a child getting candy for Halloween I say of course I do! - Yes, even though I get a few calls a day related to new jobs whether it's from AJ's Handyman or AJ's Cleaning & Restoration I still get super excited at the opportunity of meeting a new client! - Anyway, Jane tells me that last year she had scheduled a carpet cleaning from a different company for the day before Thanksgiving to make sure her carpets smelled, felt, and looked great all at the same time and was promised service as well as a discount (she had seen them advertise a lower price than was quoted). When the day came, Jane called the company once.. twice.. thr..... you get the idea, but did not get an answer, so she decided to try and call other carpet cleaners and of course no one could offer same day service the day before Thanksgiving. Needless to say Jane did not get her carpets cleaned, but she hoped no one would notice the traffic paterns or spots the next day.. however her mother did - to me that's worse than if anyone else noticed because when your mom notices, you're sure to hear about it! Jane's mom waited until some of the guests left to go to the store and rent a carpet cleaning machine and made Jane clean her own carpets! Of course, the result was terrible! So this year Jane called me after being referred to me from a previous client and made me promise to go the day before and clean her carpets, I decided to put it in writing and saying that if we do not come we will pay her $150!

Moral of the story, make sure you hire a reputable company.. it may cost you $10-20.. extra but it will be worth it in the end!

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog, and I hope you got a laugh at the story as I did!

Tips on hiring a carpet cleaner!

Posted on September 15, 2013 at 8:30 PM Comments comments (0)

I believe that building a good professional relationship with every client is a company's key to success, and that is why myself and my employees (all family members) do our best to provide excellent service at an affordable price. I have however seen other carpet cleaners in the area who offer not so great services at high end pricing, and I believe that is the best way to ruin everyone's opinion of carpet cleaners, we are not all the same I promise!

Here are some tips on hiring your next carpet cleaner!

1 - Avoid the folks who advertise only a phone number, extremely cheap prices, and do not offer any garanties!

- In our industry, us professionals call those guys "bait and switch cleaners" meaning they bait you with their extremely low pricing, however in the end they charge you more than us professionals would! I do not like bashing my competition however if they are giving the rest of us carpet cleaners, who work hard and provide excellent service in order to build a client base and support our families, I am more than happy to advise folks against hiring them!

2 - Make sure your carpet cleaners are registered with the state, insured, and bonded!

- Every business has to be registered with the Secretary of State in order to provide services to customers. Also every business should carry insurance, but many don't. I always say it is better to ask the cleaner in advance if they are insurred rather than after an incident happens in your home.

3 - A personal tip to finish off the blog - appearance is everything! - At least to me!

- I have alwys liked the quote "You only get one chance to make a first impression", if your cleaner does not put effort into taking care of his/her equipment and more importantly themselves, do you think they will put effort into taking care of your carpets?

Feel free to comment!

As always, I would like to thank the community of Des Moines for their support, we would not be where we are without you guys!
